"Super Colonia" and "Xenalita"

"Super Colonia" and "Xenalita"--two super heroes who proclaim themselves to be not so super. They tell children that they are indeed heroes, but they have no super powers. Their powers, so to speak, lie in what they can accomplish--they get good grades in school, they mind their parents, they are good people. This sort of "super normalcy" is something that the children can aspire to.

What's really interesting is where their names come from. "Super Colonia" represents the best of what outlying poor neighborhoods (colonias) have to offer. He goes back into his community to educate and protect the youth. With a sword in hand, "Xenalita" does the same. She is a cross between Xena, the Warrior Princess of TV fame, and Adelita, the partner to Pancho Villa often depicted with bandoleros strapped across her chest. We see two strong female influences here--just as strong as young San Juan women should be.
